Defend the Upper Walbran Valley
View this entire Video on Line at: wildernesscommittee.org
The
Upper Walbran Valley is threatened by logging. This area is outside
of the Provincial Park know as Carmanah/Walbran but is designated
as a Special
Management Zone by the now defunct Forest Practices Code. Weyerhaeuser
and TimberWest are both building roads, logging, and hauling at
a feverish pace while they still can. They are now monitoring themselves
with no regard for the fish, wildlife, ancient forest, and watershed.
This video's narration explains the situation while graphically
illustrating the contract between the wilderness and industrial
zones.

Cathedral
Grove
With
the help of a biologist this film looks into the sensitive nature
of the ecology of this internationally renowned park. Cathedral
Grove is only 156 hectares compared to Vancouver's Stanley Park:
400 hectares and Victoria's Beacon Hill Park: 75 hectares but is
host to over 850,000 visitors each year. Weyerhaeuser owns the surrounding
land and at every opportunity is cutting down the forest. This fact
is hidden by the company and ignored by Park officials. Western
Canada Wilderness Committee looks at issues around wind tunnels
created by logging which cause blow downs inside the park, preserving
the park by expanding its boundaries, and the need for alternative
access points to help
diversify the use of the forest by the public.

The
Street - A film with the Homeless
Six
years in the making, THE STREET is an intense, rugged and intimate
study of three homeless men in Montreal. Made with the homeless,
the film gives voice and vision to a segment of society which is
disenfranchised and stereotyped. Building upon a foundation of honesty
and trust, the filmmakers are neither voyeurs nor judges. THE STREET
is a moving non-fiction feature with all the power and process of
good narrative storytelling. Its characters live through vicious
cycles of addiction, hope, recovery and despair. But they also rise
above the street - with their own sense of dignity, humanity and
community. The film is set in a context which sees the social safety
net disintegrating, crumbling beneath the weight of the economic
agenda. With the collapse of our civil society, we are awakened
to the frightening realization that we are all but a few steps away
from being
claimed by the street. THE STREET bridges the gap between compassion
and action -between 'us' and 'them'.

HOLOCAUST
IN PARADISE - The Struggle for East Timor
Refugees
from the military forces of Indonesia speak of their occupation
in East Timor. The connection between Canada and the financial support
for the military regime that brutally killed 350,000 Timorese is
outlined and explored. This film helped to embarrass the Canadian

East Timor which, after more massacres and international intervention
is now a free state who have elected as their leader a man who was
imprisoned for twenty years for being a freedom fighter.
